What is Adult ADD?

  • Adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder – also referred to as Adult ADHD or Adult ADD – is the common term used to describe the neuropsychiatric condition attention-deficit hyperactivity disorderADHD – when it is present in adults.
  • Adult ADD is a neurological brain disorder that manifests as a persistent pattern of inattention, hyperactivity or impulsivity that is more frequent and severe than is typically observed in individuals at a comparable level of development.
  • Adult ADD is also characterized by disorganization, poor concentration, mood swings, a quick temper and stress intolerance.
  • Adult ADD affects relationships, job performance, and emotional well being.
  • Adult ADD is often confused with or hidden by other disorders exhibiting similar symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, conduct disorder and even addiction problems.
  • ADHD which begins in childhood, can also persist into adulthood. In fact, about 60% of individuals diagnosed with ADHD as children continue to have symptoms as adults.
  • Adult ADD is considered a disability and even with treatment, some people have need of modifications in their work settings to be successful.
